Kimo Saper suggested an idea (#5437) · Jul 13, 2021 at 09:01 PM · appsadmincloudshellresourcesmanagement
Currently, an entire Family may be categorized as "Admin Only". This works well for some types of network devices that we want to make off limits. Other times, we need a more granular control. In a network test lab, using the same Shell for them, say Cisco IOSXR, we may have some units that are core backbone items that we need in the system and want to put under admin only; while others are part of the units for testing(DUT pool). Because they use the same shell, they are in the same family, and thus are excluded from the possibility of using the "admin only" functionality.
The other logical extension for this is with Apps. Especially with cybertraining exercises. We want to be able to deploy the training environment but only expose some of the VMs (now resources) to the 'Red Team' making the attack. Again, with the current Gen2 Shell design this is not possible to use the "Admin Only" functionality.
The ask is for a more granular ability control what resources are "admin only". This may include adding at the model level or at the individual resource level (by maybe a standard attribute).

Hi Kimo,
This is already available today. You can set the resource visibility to either get the family defaults or override it with a different value.
This can be done from the Portal's inventory page when you edit a resource, or via the SetResourceVisibility API.

Ok so we have this for resource, but we don't have the same flag available for Apps.
What's the solution for apps? Does it require a custom deployment template? I don't see that as an option anywhere for apps, even on stock deployment options (Openstack, VCenter, AWS, Azure). We specifically need apps to have the same capability. I get that we can hid via API, but really this should not require customized code to implement for Apps when resources can already do it.

Hey Kimo, after reading your last comment, this is a nice addition.
We have started moving to a more modern architecture which is micro-services based, anything that can ease our workflows can add value. we will review it and consider adding that.
Thank you!
